Remember a time not that long ago when animated movies were a rarity in theaters? In fact, Disney was the only player at one point and they would usually only release one a year. That made them a special occasion and they were commonly must-sees. Nowadays, there's some type of animated film coming out about every other week. Therefore, the law of averages would dictate that they all won't be winners.
I really didn't have any desire to see "Open Season" anytime soon. I've been an admirer of Martin Lawrence's work for some time, but let's face it, his latest efforts haven't been much to write home to Mom about. Then E mentioned he saw it and raved about how good it was. That moved it up a little on the priority list. Now that I'm watching Elijah and Mariah for a week, they both wanted to see it
so I conceded and went to check it out.
"Open Season" is Lawrence voicing the character of a domesticated bear who's put back in the wild. He's been tamed for so long that naturally he wants to find his way back "home" to the cushy life that he's known. As with every other formulaic movie like this one that you've seen, he gets attached to the animals in the wild and discovers he doesn't want to leave.
Ultimately, this movie was geared to the shorties so how did they like it? One telling fact regarding that is when we left, Elijah and Mariah kept going on and on about how hilarious the trailer for "Happy Feet" was. To them, that was the funniest part of the movie. Not a good sign.
I really did want to like this movie. I really did want to be entertained to the point where I was laughing all throughout it. The fact is it really was just average. Maybe it didn't help that I had just seen "Cars" so expectations may have been a little higher than normal. However, it doesn't change the fact that "Open Season" couldn't hold it's own.
My rating: C-

DUDE, YOU ARE ON CRACK!!! THAT MOVIE WAS HILARIOUS!!! The "poop" scene, the squirrels, the alpha deer, etc etc etc...that movie is an easy A- or better.

The poop scene was the one scene I clearly remember laughing out loud about. The rest of it was just a little chuckle here and there. The Alpha deer had SO much potential since it was done by Patrick Warburton but they didn't do a very good job of using him.
