Finally entering our Christmas top five...
5- Friday After Next
Whether stuffy movie critcs want to admit it or not, the very first "Friday" was an instant classic. It was so good that even when it's played on regular cable where they have to censor some parts, it still holds up. The Hollywood laws dicated that meant there had to be a sequel or to. I was one of the first people to say that they should have drawn the line with the second one yet they still kept going. Thank goodness they did.
The very first time Diah saw "Friday After Next", she raved about how much she liked it and how funny it was. I figured she didn't know what she was talking about, even though I hadn't even seen it. I waited until it hit video before I finally had my chance. Quite frankly, I
didn't see what all the fuss was about.
There are some movies that may take a time or two to view before they really grow on you. "Friday After Next" was definitely one of those. Each time I saw it, it got better and better. The few moments that I thought where funny the first time I saw it like Money Mike and Damon just got funnier with each passing viewing. Plus, I was digging other moments that for some reason, I had missed previously.
Ice Cube was smart enough to realize that he has very little, if any, comedic talent. He had Mike Epps in his prime and newcomers Terry Crews and Katt Williams to do that for him. As a matter of fact, after "Friday After Next", Katt had made his mark as a bonafide scene stealer in everything else he would later appear in.
This is almost as far off as you can get from your traditional Christmas movie. I say almost because the furthest away you can get is actually coming up in a future review. At any rate, "Friday After Next" did center around Christmas time so for better or worse, it still qualifies. No disrespect to the original, but it's quietly rivalling its predecessor as the best movie in the series.
