More Christmas countdown goodness...
7 - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
I never realized how many of the classics that I grew up with and have grown to love all originated in the 60s. That means by the time I saw them when I was a shortie, they were already well over a decade old. Most of them are now over a quarter century old and
STILL holding up against the Christmas movies of today.
We all learned the song growing up and eventually saw the story behind it with this short. Or maybe some of you saw the movie first and learned the song that way. At any rate, there are few films that are as synonymous with a holiday as "Rudolph". And to think that he wasn't even one of the original reindeer.
Years after watching this for the first time, I ran into an interesting coincidence. I ended up working with a guy who was the spitting image of Hermey. Mark hadn't seen the flick in years so he couldn't relate. Nevertheless, it was always hard to hold a conversation with Mark without my wondering if he also secretly wanted to be a dentist.
Rankin/Bass established themselves as the standard for holiday films. Such simple claymation created memories for generations that will continue to entertain for several more years.
