And the Christmas list goes on...
10 - Scrooged
The story has been told so many times that I don't think anyone could accurately keep track. "A Christmas Carol" has been interpreted in animation, claymation, various sitcoms and even by the Muppets. Yet this comedic modernized version starring Bill Murray ranks among the best interpretations known to man.
Most classic movies are successful because of it's more than just a strong lead drawing you to it. There's usually a supporting cast that
accentuates that actor's talents accordingly. "Scrooged" is no different. One of the best here is Carol Kane as the Ghost of Chirstmas Present. The chemistry between her and Murray's character Frank Cross comes across perfect as she tries to show him the error of his ways.
I love it when the crabby Ghost of Christmas past visits Cross. The scenes with the golf ball oozing out of his rotting flesh and Murray's subsequent reactions to such is priceless. If there is one thing Murray can nail it's his expressions.
As hard as it may be to believe, prior to seeing this, I had never seen any other version of "A Christmas Carol". If I'm not mistaken, I had never even read the actual story. As far as I'm concerned, this version did a more than sufficient job of serving as my introduction to the classic. Of course the tale has continually been re-imagined several more times since the release of "Scrooged" in 1988 but to this date, none quite as good.
