This may not be the most appropriate way to start off this particular type of entry, but...well, when has that ever stopped me before? Does anyone remember there being a drinking game by that name back when we were younger? I never played it (and I'm not just saying that because the folks and others may be reading this) but that's what comes to mind when I think of Tom Poston. The big guy died Monday night at the age of 85 after a brief illness.
Poston starred on a couple of shows that were staples in my childhood. First there was "Mork and Mindy". Honestly though, it was a little difficult to remember anyone from that show except for Robin Williams since he was quite the supernova back then.
He was also on "The Bob Newhart Show" which I only caught a couple of shows here and there. My joint was "Newhart". Larry, Daryl and his other brother Daryl. Tom was there as the clueless straight man handyman to Bob Newhart's reliable nervous guy.
I didn't realize until I read the news item on his passing that he was married to Suzanne Pleshette. So that means for several seasons he had to watch his wife getting in bed with another man while he's on the very same set. I know they're just acting, but still...
Tom Poston was one of those classic second fiddle guys. But man could he play that fiddle. Rest in peace, Tom.
