Doesn't this just figure? It was less than two years ago that Sean Levert was singing "Dance with My Father" with his father Eddie at Gerald's funeral. Now we get word that Sean has passed away himself.
Sean Levert died this past Sunday from causes unknown. He was the much too young age of 39. He had just started serving a jail term for unpaid child support when he began suffering from high blood pressure and having hallucinations.
I could think of hundreds of places I would want to spend my waning seconds if I had the chance and jail would be last on the list. It's unfortunate that his last minutes on earth were wasted like that. That brotha certainly deserved better.
As far as the group Levert goes, Sean was always second fiddle to his much better known brother. Gerald had the husky voice that set him apart from any other 80s R&B sensation so of course Sean often went unnoticed. Ironically, in a trio named after the family, Sean was the only other "Levert" in the group. Childhood friend Marc Gordon rounded out the three.
The funny thing about it was back when they really hit it big with hits like "Cassanova", Sean was the one known for being the thicker one in the group. Gerald was big-boned but never really that heavy set. Later on, as the years and fame got good to him, Gerald blew up in more ways than one. Had they ever reunited, Sean may have been in Gerald's shadow once more. Only this time, physically-speaking.
I can't help but also feel for their dad Eddie. In the span of less than two years, he has now lost two sons. I can't even imagine how difficult that had to be. It goes without saying that a parent shouldn't outlive his or her children. It still doesn't make it any easier. And when He calls you home, it's time to go no matter who's earthly child you are.
Rest in peace, Sean.
