Grey Matter

The end of year is fast approaching and that would normally be the time I would count down the best shows of the year on television.  Don't worry, I'm still going to do it.  It's just that I was trying to hold out that long to say my piece on "Grey's Anatomy".  After suffering thru yet another trainwreck of an episode Thursday, I can't hold it in any longer.  Not only because I have to get some things off my chest, but also because I'm not so certain they will even make my list this year.  So where did they go wrong?  In the words of the immortal Usher, you better sit back, this may take a while...

First off, let's get the most obvious out of the way.  The whole storyline of Izzy (Katherine Hiegl) and the dead guy is utterly ridiculous.  It was a little fascinating at first when the Native American guy told her she was still seeing him because she hadn't burned all his belongings.  It made a little sense.  Just a little.  But then he not only came back again but they had her having sex with the guy?!  The DEAD guy?!  That was taking it too far even for a show that features a bunch of over-sexed grown folks.

I want to say the whole reason for going down that path was because Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Greys_anatomy_ver4 Dean Morgan) is perhaps a fan favorite?  I have heard ladies say there is something about him that is sexy.  I personally don't see it, but even if that were the case, they really should have found some other way to work him back into the show.  More flashbacks...have a twin brother...maybe a strange doctor show up that looks remarkably like him.  Anything would have been better than a story of Izzy gettin' it on with a ghost and/or a figment of her imagination.

Then there's the back-story of the interns.  I'm not even talking about how they are going overboard with the apparent hazing of them.  Actually, I take that back.  Let's talk about that too.  Okay...so maybe interns in a teaching hospital do have to endure a little tough love their first year.  Yang (Sandra Oh) and the crew are treating the interns WAY worse than they ever got it.  They don't even treat them like human beings in some instances.  I can't imagine any hospital being like that.

The interns got treated so bad that they had to learn on their own by performing surgery on one another.  Because I'm sure that happens all the time too.  I can understand that maybe one or two interns may come up with that crazy idea, but every single one of them going along with it?  And then actually going thru with it too? Come on.

Apparently, getting rid of Isiah Washington wasn't enough to appease the gay and lesbian community.  The writers must have agreed to write a lesbian storyline into the script too so now we get Dr. Torres (Sarah Ramirez) discovering she may or may not be a lesbian.  The only thing is she has no chemistry with ANYONE.  It's not that we don't buy she's a lesbian because she didn't seem attracted to O'Malley (T.K. Knight).  It's because Ramirez has trouble expressing any type of romantic emotions whatsoever.  Not quite a good fit at a hospital where they seem to care more about getting it on than helping patients.

The overall tone of Seattle Grace has gotten absurd.  They were always a little free-wheeling but they have gone completely overboard this year.  Every other scene they are trying to find something funny whether the situation calls for it or not.  If it's not trying to squeeze out a laugh, it's someone else trying to get the latest fresh face into bed.  No wonder Meredith (Kate Walsh)wanted to get out of there.

The season started off with a very prophetic storyline.  Chief Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) was extremely upset that Seattle Grace had fallen from the #2 teaching hospital to double digits somewhere.  That's exactly what has happened to the actual show.  "Grey's" has a had a quicker fall from grace than any show I can remember.  Can they get it back?  So far, they are way off track for that to happen.  If they don't at least end this season on a strong high note, I doubt I will be tuning in for more shark-jumping in Season Six.
