It was a rather bitter-sweet irony that Bea Arthur's name happened to come up in conversation the other day. I was talking to an attorney and he described the plaintiff as having a very similar appearance to that of Arthur. However, from the extended description, she sounded much more heavy-set than the popular actress. Not even 24-hours later, I saw the unfortunate news:
Bea Arthur had succumbed to cancer and died Saturday morning in her home in Los Angeles. She was 86-years-old.
I never did get into "Golden Girls". It's not that I didn't appreciate the humor, I just never took the time to watch it on a regular basis. From what I hear, it was some pretty good entertainment. Even the few episodes I did catch here and there were amusing. However, since I was not a regular viewer, that is not how I remember Bea.
The more I think about it, I didn't even remember her that well from her own television show "Maude". If I ever did see a full episode of that, I was too young to remember. I just recall thinking that was one big lady to be married to such a meek little man. At least from a physical standpoint, it was quite the role reversal.
I think the one thing that resonated with me was her appearance on "All in the Family". There was bigot Archie Bunker thinking that he was King Kong and couldn't nobody tell him anything. Along came Maude and put him right in his place. She could have went toe-to-toe with him verbally OR physically and could have taken him out either way.
