Thanks to the prevalent use of steroids, the news of another wrestler death no longer comes as that big of a shock. However, when one of those cats happens to live a prolonged a life, it's quite a refreshing turn of events.
Captain Lou Albano made it all the way to the ripe age of 76-years-old before he ultimately passed away today due to undisclosed causes.
The Captain was once part of the WWE stable of wrestlers back when it was known as WWF and Hulk Hogan reigned supreme. Even though I watched wrestling at the time, I honestly can't remember him actually performing him in nan match. He was always around, but I just don't recall him doing in any actual wrestling.
It's rather odd because one of my earliest memories of him is him being one of the cartoons in that Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling cartoon. I could never figure out how he got to be one of the personalities big enough to earn a spot on the show. Most of all, I always wondered why he had rubberbands stuck to his face.
His biggest claim to fame from a pop culture standpoint was probably his association with Cyndi Lauper. At the height of her popularity, she inexplicably cast him in her "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video. No clue how and/or why she chose him. Was he her bodyguard at the time? I certainly hope not because he wasn't the most fit person around which would probably be the last person you would want protecting you.
At any rate, his face and quirky style caused him to be a permanent fixture of the 80s landscape. Although I may never know how exactly you were a captain, may you rest in peace, Lou.
