Anyway, Alaina Reed Hall passed away earlier today. Official cause of death hasn't been released yet, but she had made it known she was battling breast cancer. She was 63-years-old.
Many of us have our earliest memory of Ms. Hall from her time on Sesame Street back in the day. I didn't follow actors and actresses back then so I didn't know her real name. I only knew her as Olivia. That was good enough for me. Back then, it was just refreshing to see a brotha (that would be Gordon) and a sista on network television. Even if it was public television and it was in the afternoon as opposed to primetime.
Later on, she would gain more fame as Mary Jenkins' (Marla Gibbs) sister Rose Lee. She was never the highlight of the show though. It was clearly Gibbs' show and Jackée Harry would turn out being the break out star with her scene stealing. But at least it gave Ms. Hall more exposure to folks who may have been too young to remember her from her Sesame Street days.
It's a shame that the mainstream media is so dedicated on focusing on Tiger's indiscretions that this significant passing doesn't even make the news. Ms. Hall deserved much better than a little blurb on a website or two. It's a shame that the bigger outlets couldn't see that, but we appreciated what she did.
Thank you for showing us how to get to Sesame Street, Ms. Hall. May you rest in peace.
