There are sometimes when I do these obits where the celebrities that I mention may be a bit of a stretch. That's only because they may be to me even if they really never had a big following. This may be one of those instances.
I didn't recognize the name either so don't feel bad if you didn't. Even when I heard that he played Otho in the 1988 classic "Beetlejuice", I still wasn't familiar with who he was. Only because I couldn't remember the names of the other characters. But then the picture definitely registered.
It's hard for him to be considered a one-hit wonder when you look at his IMDB resume and see everything that he did since "Beetlejuice". Unfortunately, none of them were as big as his spot in in that flick. Or near as memorable. Well...unless you count the role he had on that one episode of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" where he played a fake psychic. Every "Fresh Prince" fan should remember that.
The thing is that Shadix was one of those actors who had one role that really defined him. He wasn't even the star of that film, but his interior decorator character was enough that it made an imprint with you. Actually, all of those characters did thanks to the writing.
Even more fascinating to me than his death was the fact that he was in a wheelchair. I couldn't find more info about that anywhere though. I was interested to see if he had some tragic accident that left him paralyzed a la Daryl Mitchell or if it was just a temporary thing.
At any rate, I'm glad Shadix left us with the lasting memory of his part in "Beetlejuice" before his passing. Rest in peace, Otho.
