Not a good week for legends. On the same day that we got the news that NFL great Bubba Smith had left us we find out about this young woman. Even though you're hearing it here a couple of days later (you know how I've been out here lately). It's yet another passing where the celebrity was too young which makes it rather surprising.
"Grease" actress Annette Charles passed away at her home in Los Angeles Wednesday due to complications from cancer. She was only 63-years-old.
I had to do some quick research to find out exactly who Annette Charles was. There are a lot of the characters from "Grease" that I can recognize by their real names, but she wasn't one. Then I discovered that she was the one that played Cha Cha. She was one of my favorite bit characters from that flick. It should be pretty obvious why. I always wished she had a bigger part.
Funny thing is when I was talking to Mom about this one I was having trouble trying to describe who she was. Of course she didn't recognize Charles by her real name either. Cha Cha didn't even ring a bell. For some reason the next thing that popped in my mind was the description that one of the Pink Ladies gave for her in the movie: "the best dancer at St. Bernadine high...with the worst reputation".
Her death was a little ironic because it was only a few months ago that the guy that played her date, Jeff Conaway, had died as well. Now she's gone too. It's getting to the point where not too many of the lesser knowns from that great film are still around. I wonder what all those T-Birds and Pink Ladies are up to these days?
No matter what other roles Charles ever had before or after "Grease" she will always be Cha Cha to me. The fact that she was a part of one of the greatest movies ever was good enough for her to have one of the best reputations ever.
Rest in peace, Cha Cha.
