That's just the first thing that came to mind when trying to think of a clever title for this passing. Fortunately, she doesn't appear to have anything in common with the famous LL song other than the name alone. But for those that don't know that cut, the title could also be an endearing intro to a lady that brought us many laughs.
Comedienne/actress Yvette passed away last Thursday after losing her battle with cervical cancer. She was 48-years-old.
My first recollection of Yvette would have been on the short-lived sitcom "Thea". The same joint that got R&B singer Brandy her first start. It was actually a pretty good show that deserved a longer run than just 19 episodes. The weakest link was probably the star herself, Thea Vidale. Yvettte was always clever in her small role as Thea's sister. I'm sure it was a challenge for her to make sure she didn't upstage the main star.
Her one role that always cracks me up the most though is the little cameo she had in the classic "Friday". She played Smokey's (Chris Tucker) blind date. I still crack up when I think about how she compared herself to Janet Jackson only to be quickly corrected by Smokey that she looked more like Freddie Jackson. There was more to that small scene they had and all of it was hilarious.
Yvette would go on to star with Brandy again in her show "Moesha". She was able to parlay that into a role in the spinoff "The Parkers". Each and every time she was always a supporting character. Never given her own vehicle to shine. I doubt she complained too much. They were all paying gigs which is more than many folks in Hollywood looking for their break can say.
Sad thing is at her young age she probably still had time to find that one role where she would have been the big star. Not now though thanks to stupid cancer claiming yet another good person while so many bad ones continue to remain here.
Rest in peace, Yvette.
