I initially started seeing the posts about the news of this death where they were just mentioning just the name. Nothing else. Had no idea who they were talking about. Thought it was just some common FB contacts talking about a mutual friend. It sucked to find out out how far off I was and who they were really talking about.
My first thought when I saw the news story was his age. I had no idea Cory was that old. Relatively speaking. I mean I clearly knew that he wasn't a teenager. It's not like he had the childlike face that most of those Nickelodeon stars have. He did look like he was a shade too old for high school. Not near as bad as the "Grease" folks looked, but still older. He may not have had quite the appearance of a high school age kid, but he clearly had down the demeanor with his Finn character on "Glee". Performers like him is what makes the show so great.
I feel rather bad because I have neglected my "Glee" duties this past season. I wasn't the faithful Gleek I had been in the past. I didn't even realize it until it was too late. I had my DVR set to record too many shows during the same time slot so when the new season of "Glee" started it was too far down on the priority list. All that time I spaced it off and just figured that the new season was taking forever to start. Messed around and missed the entire last season. What would essentially end up being Monteith's final season.
It's no secret that I've been a fan of "Glee" since day one. The reason being that it reminded me of my Swing Choir days at Norwalk. And just like the show, our Swing Choir was made up of folks from all different walks of life. There was even the jock who wasn't a strong dancer like Finn. So I could relate to that characer. I felt like I knew him.
It always seems like a worse tragedy when one of the young Hollywood stars like Monteith pass away. The young ones that still had so much potential ahead of them. The ones where they realize their talent but make bad decisions that end up costing them their lives. We always hope that other future stars will learn from their mistakes. Fortunately, some do. Unfortunately, not all of them.
Rest in peace, Cory.
