First Fridays February
I know I've already done First Fridays as a topic for this category before. Although I honestly don't remember when it was and simply don't feel like checking my own archives to give you the exact date. However, I wanted to take a bit of a different angle this time around. Don't get it twisted though...I will still give you a brief rundown of the February First Fridays in the process.
If and when my teeny business XL-Images (yes...I know I still have to do a dedicated post for that) ever takes off, I will have First Fridays to thank. It was about a year ago when I approached one of the co-founders about the idea to take pictures for the event. I had noticed that their then regular photographer was a little sporadic with his appearances. Quite frankly, I think he may have been a little intimidated by the crowd. When he did show he didn't stay late. I offered to be there the whole time to capture the event in images and the rest was history.
Since forming that partnership, I have been able to network with other individuals to procure various shooting gigs. Not near as many as I would like mind you, but still more than I would have had otherwise. Moreover, with each passing First Fridays my potential clientelle list grows even bigger. If all of these folks that are talking about doing Spring shoots really come thru then this joint venture with First Fridays will have paid off handsomely. It's the proverbial gift that keeps giving.
As for the actual event that night, the theme this time around was Masquerade Dress. That means all folks really had to do was wear a Mardi Gras type of mask of some sort and any dress code appropriate outfit they saw fit. How hard could that be? Surely that would mean there would be more than the standard 2 - 3% of the folks adhering, right? Well I was surprised on more than one front.
There were actually quite a few people that did shop up with the Masquerade masks. Both men and women. I would venture to say that the number creeped closer to 10% than any other First Fridays has garnered for participation. About the only other one that came closer was the All Black Everything and that was just because folks were probably planning on wearing dark colors anyway and just got lucky that it matched the theme.
Now don't get me wrong, it's not like folks kept those masks on the whole night. In fact, if anyone in there left theirs on the entire time then they would have been the first and only. Most people would have it on for a few minutes then relegate it to the top of their head or elsewhere. It may have been subzero temperatures outside but it was HOT up in that club. Having that mask on was additional uncomfortable heat that anyone would want to avoid if they could. And speaking of how hot it was up in that piece...
That was probably the most crowded I have seen First Fridays in a minute. It was a bit of an anomaly given how cold it was outside. I couldn't figure it out until Tiffany (one of the FF staff) informed me they had advertised $1 cover before 11pm. That would also explain why there was alwready more people there before 11pm than there normally is. See...if I was paying more attention to those pluggers they put on The Book promoting the upcoming First Firdays I would have known all that.
The evening ended a bit differently than any other FF event. I ended up helping a friend of mine out with a ride since he was bit too...uh...enlightened with libations to get behind the steering wheel himself. I will refrain from releasing his name so as not to put him on front street without his endorsement. I was just happy to find out that he was doing just fine today. I don't mind taking a detour at the end of a long night if I know it means a good friend of mine willl make it home safely. That's just me giving someone else something to be grateful for.
You can check out all of the finalized picture from February's FF escapades in all their glory in the First Fridays February 2011 album. You will note that I FINALLY found a watermark that I'm happy with in these new photos. It's not too intrusive yet it sufficiently promotes my site and work. More importantly, the pics themselves turned out pretty well if I must say so myself. The better the turnout, the better the pics. See for yourself and enjoy while I look forward to seeing you in the place next month!
