Yeah...I know I said I wouldn't make this a regular category on Wednesdays. I'm still not. It just happens to be a coincidence that everytime Wednesdays rolls around I start thinking about some things and/or folks that I haven't heard of in a while. I just don't always share them with everyone out here Seeing someone mention this same thing on The Book today mad me decide to share this one.
The name sounds a little awkward to those who have never heard it before. It's awful close to that offensive word "niglet". If I'm not mistaken, "Sniglet" has actually been around longer as a word. At least longer as common knowledge. It was certainly more widely accepted ever since it made its debut back in the 80s. All thanks to an HBO show few folks probably even remember called "Not Necessarily the News".
It was during that monthly show that comedian Rich Hall would present us with words that were not in the dictionary but should be. That's what a sniglet is. They were entirely made up words that sounded just as ridiculous as their definition. However, most of them made perfect sense. Enough so that it always made you think such a word really should be in the dictionary.
Like "toastaphobia" which is the fear of sticking a fork in a toaster even when it's unplugged. Or "cinemuck" which is the sticky substance on the floor of a movie theater. It makes perfect sense that there should be words to define things like that yet there never was until sniglets came along. I still wonder how come some of them never made it into the dictionary. Webster's adds words each year so why couldn't some of those have gotten in?
My personal favorite sniglet was one that I made up for English class back in high school. Our Creative Writing teacher Mrs. McGreevy (I think that was her name. I know it's close. If I'm wrong, I'm sure Mike will correct me) gave us the assignment to come up with one every week. My first was my best:
pidittlehole : the person who drives around with their bright lights on to compensate for the fact that one of their regular headlights is out
I can't even remember what other words I used after that one. Or what anyone else did for that matter. That sniglet alone shut all the rest down. Just as with all the great sniglets of the world that one should have also made the final cut to make it into the dictionary. At the very least, they should bring back sniglets so a new generation can be jus tas amused as we were.
