It's been a while since I've had a mass recipient. I don't mean an instance where there was a co-loser or a couple here and there. I mean a situation like the Duke one or Northwestern's incident. Coincidentally, it's another major university that garner's this week's prestige. Congratulations to the University of Miami!
This recent brawl at a football game with Florida International University by itself was enough to get the football team on the list. Especially the cat who had the nerve to take off his helmet and use it as a weapon...
It was the incompetence of UM's administration that helped make the whole university a loser. As part of the fallout from the fight, FIU suspended several players indefinitely. Miami dismissed only one player indefinitely and others got a whopping one game suspension. On top of that, the game for which they are suspended is going to be the Duke game. A game that many of them probably didn't care about playing in the first place.
Miami's President Donna Shalala tried to justify the weak punishments by saying she wasn't to going to throw a student under the bus because of one incident. Whatever. The players threw themselves under the bus with that fight. Take away an important game from them. If they were actually good enough to go to a bowl, it should be that game.
As for the player that whipped the helmet AND the ones seen physically stomping on opponents, they should get their scholarships revoked. I realize that football is a violent game by its very nature, but there's never any reason to take it to that type of next level. The punishments should fit the crime and it didn't in this case.
